I addressed the Peace and Security Council Meeting of the AU on the subject of combating terrorism. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the ongoing 30th AU Heads of State Summit.

I emphasized the need for our continent interventions against terrorism to address the question of ideological disorientation in spread and growth of the vice.

Terrorists get radicalized with ideas of identity through religion and sometimes tribe. Wrong ideology leads to wrong politics which in turn causes insecurity and terrorism.

The second issue is strategy. Terrorists do not fight using conventional methods. They use irregular tactics and go for soft targets. How do we protect the soft targets, the innocent targets in villages and churches? This must be addressed.

We also should look at the technical issues like use of appropriate equipment, study our cooperation strategies on issues like intelligence gathering and sharing and finally address the question of poverty and economic empowerment.
