President Yoweri Museveni has asked the Japanese government to encourage its entrepreneurs to come and invest in Uganda. Speaking at the commissioning of the rehabilitated Hoima Regional Referral Hospital in Hoima district yesterday, the President said that the relationship between Uganda and Japan should go beyond foreign aid. "I want to thank the Japanese government for their contribution towards building hospital facilities in Uganda. The relationship between Uganda and Japan should go beyond foreign aid. I want to request the Japanese government to encourage their investors and tourists to come to Uganda and also allow Ugandans access the Japanese market," he said. Hoima Regional Referral Hospital was rehabilitated using funds from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Uganda Government Project for the Rehabilitation of Hospitals and Supply of Medical Equipment in Western Uganda. The US$15 million project has seen the rehabilitation of hospitals on top supplying medical equipment in the districts of Hoima, Kabale and Kabarole. Mr. Kawazumi Kyosuke, a representative from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), said that Japan believes that healthy living is essential to all the people and it should be accessible to everyone. "I am grateful that JICA is able to contribute to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital comprehensively, both through infrastructure development as well as capacity development," he said. Dr. Tadakazu Kanno, who is Acting Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Economic Cooperation in the Embassy of Japan in Uganda, said that 6 million people are set to benefit from the improvement of medical facilities in the country. "Japan has contributed to the solution of global health challenges and better health in the world through global collaboration and effective bilateral assistance as well as utilizing its technology. We hope that the newly rehabilitated medical facilities, together with the various equipment provided through the project, will be maintained properly and keep serving those who are in need of medical services," he said. The Minister of Health, Hon. Elioda Tumwesigye, that of State for Health (General), Hon. Chris Baromunsi and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Mr. Asuman Lukwago, attended the ceremony.
